September 13, 2019: Has Amazon Cracked the DC Market with Its Online Universe?

With the Joker reportedly receiving an eight-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of its general release, DC is back in the spotlight once again. Although it never went away, director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have shown, once again, that comic culture is as entertaining today as it ever was.

Naturally, we believe Superman is and always will be the man with regards to comic book heroes. However, we also appreciate that there's a whole world of extraordinary marvels (excuse the term) out there. In fact, with technology as is it, we've now got more access to DC Comics content than ever before.

Explore the DC Universe

Of course, you can go direct to the source and read the latest news here. Alternatively, we've got you covered when it comes to everything Superman related. However, there are plenty of other ways to get your DC fix. In recent years, Amazon Prime has emerged as a hub for all things alternative. For the hardcore fans, DC Universe is available as an app. By downloading the product and paying the subscription fee, you get instant access to a wealth of DC content.

From original series and over 22,000 comics to exclusive merchandise, sneak previews and prize giveaways, DC Universe features more material than you can conceivably consume. What's more, because it's via Amazon Prime, you can access it via your TV, computer or mobile device. Of course, some of you may not be able to enjoy the service because of geo-restrictions.

Fortunately, this article explains how to avoid being locked out thanks to VPNs. The top Amazon Prime VPNs not only provide a way around geo-restrictions but added security. For example, Norton's product connects to 1,200+ virtual servers and has a no-logging policy. This means, in theory, you should be able to access DC Universe content safely, regardless of the country you're in.

An Incomplete Universe

Now, as with most things in life, the app isn't perfect. When it went live in September 2018, there was much hype surrounding it. However, for some, DC Universe needs a lot of work. Back in April 2019, Forbes contributor Paul Tassi said he didn't really get it.

"First on the chopping block is going to be DC Universe, the rather strange streaming experiment I genuinely do not understand," Tassi wrote.

He went on to point out that, despite its claims, DC Universe is missing "about 80% of the content you would expect to be there".

While the app will undoubtedly improve as time goes on, the apparent lack of content has left some DC fans searching for alternatives. Unsurprisingly, our top suggestion would be WGBS TV Live! hosted by Steve Younis and Michael Bailey. When you check out our podcast every Tuesday at 7:30pm PT, you'll not only get the latest Superman chat but have the chance to interact with the hosts via Skype.

The Internet is Awash with DC Content

For those who want something more than Superman, Netflix is an obvious source. Although content is moving across to Amazon, you can still watch the likes of Arrow and Smallville on the streaming site. For a completely different DC fix, games are your friend. From Daybreak Game Company's DC Universe Online to virtual reality offerings such as Batman: Arkham VR, you can immerse yourself in a world of superheroes in a truly interactive way.

Are any of these better than Amazon's DC Universe? For many, the jury is still out. However, knowing the way Amazon works and the resources it has at its disposal, it's highly likely the app will become a go to resource for all DC fans in the coming years. For now though, it may be worth exploring all the options this world has to offer before you completely commit yourself to DC Universe.
