March 28, 2016: "Batman v Superman" is Breaking All Kinds of Box Office Records

Who Will Win? Despite the early negative reviews from film critics, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is breaking all kinds of Box Office records, taking in $170.1 million at the US box office and $254 million overseas (a worldwide total of $424.1 million) in its opening weekend... which is the fourth-biggest opening in global history.

For those wondering, BoxOffice.com confirms that the $170.1 million domestic take is a new record for a March release, which was previously held by "The Hunger Games" in 2012 with $152.54 million.

If weekend estimates hold, Batman v Superman will beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 ($169.2 million) to become the sixth-biggest domestic opening in box office history - and the biggest Warner Bros. opening of all time.

Plus, not only did Batman v Superman shatter The Hunger Games' $152.5 million record for the best March opening of all time, but it also set the all-time best record for a pre-summer opening. It also surpassed Furious 7's $147.2 million to earn the biggest Easter weekend opening ever. (Batman v Superman also set an IMAX Easter record, earning $18 million to beat Furious 7's $13.3 million.)

While Marvel still holds third, fourth, and fifth place on the list of biggest openings, thanks to The Avengers, Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3, Batman v Superman did set a DC Comics record, surpassing both The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million).
