March 1, 2016: "Batman v Superman" Comics in General Mills Cereal Boxes

General Mills General Mills and DC Comics have teamed up to bring fans a new series of all-ages "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" comic books available in boxes of breakfast cereals across America.

Starting this month, specially-marked boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Trix and Golden Grahams will include one of four exclusive comic books, created by DC Comics writers and artists.

"We are all about bringing fun to breakfast," says Alysia Powell, senior marketing communications planner, Cereal. "It doesn't get much more fun than finding a special, collectible surprise in your cereal box."

The storylines in the comics are based on life lessons, from the importance of diverse opinions to what it truly means to be a hero.

Here are the comics in the boxes:

    • Issue 1, "Playground Heroes," written by Jeff Parker
    • Issue 2, "Field Trip," written by Christos Gage
    • Issue 3, "Picture Proof," written by Marguerite Bennett
    • Issue 4, "Lights Out," written by Joshua Williamson

Veteran artists Gary Frank and Rod Reiss drew the comic book covers. While Marcus To, Federico Dallocchio, Eduardo Pansica, RB Silva, Art Thibert, José Marzan Jr., Irma Kniivila, Jim Charalampidis, Jeromy Cox and Andrew Dalhouse illustrated the inside panels that were lettered by Deron Bennett.

All four issues have a connection - and maybe even some clues - to the upcoming "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" movie.

"All the comics that we've done to support Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were directly inspired by the film," says Alex Antone, editor at DC Comics. "Even though plot details of the film are top secret, we worked closely with filmmakers to make sure our stories were consistent. While all major reveals are saved for the film, eagle-eyed readers may discover a few clues in the comics about what's to come."

General Mills Antone says his team worked hand-in-hand with Warner Bros. Pictures and the filmmakers themselves to help come up with storylines. And since "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is a sequel to "Man of Steel", he made sure every writer had seen the film prior to writing their story.

"We wanted each story to be a fun, action-packed adventure, but we also aimed to make a statement about how both Batman and Superman inspire people to be the best versions of themselves ... albeit in different ways," he says.

The cereal box comic books are smaller than comics released for retail sale, but that doesn't mean they are any less detailed.

Antone says, "Our normal printed comics are more than double the size of these mini-comics, so we tried to keep the panel - that's the term for the different boxes on each page - count low to show off more of the art and make sure these comics are easy to read."

In addition to including the comic books, the cereal boxes will feature a Blippar-activated augmented reality/interactive game that invites fans to help Superman or Batman save the city.

"The Blippar experience brings the back panel game to life in an interactive way that is fun for the whole family," says Alysia. "Fans of all ages can play alone, or with a friend or sibling."

The comic book cereal boxes are starting to hit store shelves at major retailers now and will be available through April 2016, while supplies last.
