July 12, 2015: Breaking Down the "Batman v Superman" Comic-Con Trailer

Having now had time to take in all two and a half minutes of the new "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" trailer over the last couple of days, today I took time to grab nearly 100 stills from the trailer, and break down what we saw - scene by scene.

The trailer starts with the voice of Holly Hunter's character, who we now know is a Senator, as she addresses the assembled members of the United States Senate.

"Today, is a day for Truth", she says.

Outside, Superman lands, as protestors with plackards reading, "Superman = Illegal Alien", "This is OUR World, Not Yours!", "Aliens Doom Nations", "Earth Belongs to Humans", "Tell Us the Truth About Aliens", "When Invasion Becomes Reality, Revolt Becomes Duty", "Aliens are Un-American", "God Hates Aliens"... There are a few positive signs too, like "Superman Saves Lives" and "Share the Planet".

"The World needs to know what happened. And to know what he stands for," continues the Senator, as Superman enters the assembly. "That kind of power is very dangerous."

As the scene changes, we flashback to the fight between Superman and General Zod from "Man of Steel". We see Bruce Wayne sprinting down a Metropolis street as cars burn around him. With his phone to his ear he looks on as Zod's heat-vision cuts through the upper floors of a building. Bruce screams into his phone.

As a building topples, Bruce continues to run towards the billowing ash cloud. As he hugs a young girl amongst the destruction of the Wayne Enterprises Metropolis building, he looks up, with anger on his face.

The senator's voice continues, "Let the record show that this committee holds him responsible."

We then flash to what appears to be Alfred Pennyworth walking through a field of dead grass towards the remains of a stately building (possibly Wayne Manor).

In a Wayne Enterprisis building (likely in Gotham), Bruce Wayne looks down at a newspaper report on the destruction of the Wayne Tower in Metropolis in which "dozens" were killed. Someone has scrawled the words "You Let Your Family DIE" in red over the story. He clearly isn't impressed.

As we watch Bruce in training, pulling a large truck tire towards himself, and then staring at the Batman costume, Alfred states, "That's how it starts... The fever. The rage. That turns good mean cruel."

As police find a man chained to a wall, branded with the symbol of a bat on his chest, and a Batarang protruding out of the wall, a voice states, "This Bat vigalante is like a one-man right of terror."

A swarm of Bats fly out of a tunnel as someone screams in the background.

We next switch to the offices of the Daily Planet, where Perry White is sternly telling Clark Kent, "You don't get to decide what the 'right thing' is. Nobody cares about Clark Kent taking on the Batman."

As Lois Lane meets with Superman, she reaches across to touch the symbol on his chest and tells him, "This means something. It's all some people have. It's all that gives them hope."

We see a family stranded on the roof of their home. Flood waters rage around them. They've painted the "S" symbol on the roof, and as they look up, Superman appears above them in the sky. The mother reaches up to him.

We then see Superman standing out the front of his Smallville home with Martha Kent. She says, "People hate what they can't understand. Be their hero Clark. Be their angel. Be their monument. Be anything they need you to be... Or be none of it. You don't owe this world a thing. You never did."

While she's saying these words we see Superman saving a women from a burning building. We see people at a Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) celebration reaching out to touch Superman. We see a Russian rocket explode on the launch pad, with Superman arriving to save the nose of the rocket (and supposedly the occupants inside).

Next, with see Mercy (as played by Tao Okamoto) opening the doors for Holly Hunter's character. She meets with Lex Luthor. He asks her, "Do you know the oldest lie in America Senator? Devils don't come from Hell beneath us... They come from the sky."

We see Lex standing over Superman, who is kneeling before him. Superman appears to be in pain, but looks up at Lex with extreme anger on his face.

Mercy walks before two soldiers as they push a cryo container, which we see contains the body of General Zod.

As Bruce Wayne looks up at a costume in a glass display, his voiceover asks Alfred, "Twenty years in Gotham, how many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?" The costume, which appears to have an "R" symbol on its upper left chest, has been spray painted in yellow with the taunting message, "Hahaha! Jokes on you Batman".

We see a quick flash of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince.

We see Superman stand before a group of armed men in an underground tunnel. They have the "S" patch on the upper arms of their uniforms. He walks between them as they kneel at his approach.

Batman, in his armed tech suit, stands on a rain-drenched rooftop, pulls a cover of the Bat signal, throws the electrical switch, and lights up the stormy night with the Bat symbol.

Bruce continues, "He has the power to wipe out the entire human race. I'm gonna have to destroy him."

In a sequence of quick images we see: a scuba diver approach what appears to be a meteor under water, men on horses riding fast, Thomas and Martha Wayne approached by a gunman in an alleyway, the gun fires and a young Bruce screams, a funeral procession as two coffins are carried towards the Wayne mausoleum, the Batwing flies down over Gotham as fires light up the streets below, Lois Lane (reporting from the protest outside the U.S. Senate) gets to her feet as she looks forward in shock, a stern-looking Bruce Wayne looks out at Diance Prince who looks back at him before getting in to a car, Wonder Woman in battle jumps forward, she brings her bracelets together to catch the force of what appears to be Superman's heat-vision, and we see a stange explosion of energy.

As Batman, in yet another costume, emerges to confront the soldiers dedicated to Superman. He fights them in hand-to-hand combat.

Alfred's says to Bruce, "You're going to go to war. He is not our enemy."

A motorbike races towards the LexCorp building, where some kind of attack has taken place.

We see Lex Luthor approach a large chunk of green glowing Kryptonite in a display case.

The scene flashes back to that rain-drenched rooftop where Batman pounces on Superman, who is lying atop a skylight. They two crash through and fall to the floor below.

We again see Wonder Woman in battle mode. She is thrown back against a concrete block.

Superman, eyes glowing red, flies towards Batman, who fires his grappling gun and swings out of the way just before Superman's heat-vision explodes the tower he was just perched on.

"Black and Blue. God versus Man. Day versus Night." exclaims Lex Luthor.

Lois and Superman embrace. Superman hovers angrily about to launch forward. Batman crashes through a window.

Obviously enjoying himself, Lex Luthor jokingly remarks, "The red capes are coming! The red capes are coming!" (an obvious play on the quote attributed to Paul Revere, "The redcoats are coming! The redcoats are coming!").

In a final scene, (in slow motion) we see Superman walk towards the Batmobile. He forcefully tears the front off the Batmobile, revealing Batman inside. He throws away the metal in his hand as Batman stands to face him.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" opens nationwide in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters on March 25, 2016, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
