March 29, 2015: Rare Find - Chinese Superman Matchbox Cover

Chinese Superman Matchbox Cover The image shown here is an enlarged photo of the Hong Kong-produced WAH TUNG MATCH COMPANY Chinese SUPERMAN matchbox cover.

The date on these two covers is unknown but is speculated to be from around 1966. The true size of this item is 1-7/16" wide by 1-7/8" high. John Sindall, founder of the Q Collection Comic Book Preservation Project purchased the cover, which had been removed from the matchbox when he found it. This unique Superman collectible will be laminated and used in the SUPERMAN BINDER BONUS SECTION of the Q Collection Comic Book Preservation Project.

Here's a bit more on this Asian oddity:

This is a match box from Wah Tung Match Co. featuring an interesting localized image of SUPERMAN as filtered through Chinese style art. I haven't been able to find out a whole lot about the company, beyond that they are named after a part of Hong Kong ("Tung Wah"). The date they released this Sueprman pack is unknown, too. The only real info I have about the company is that they also released a series of match packs featuring great images from Chinese mythology. And here's a Dutch site that has dozens of different Wah Tung Co. match box images.

Many thanks to CollectingSuperman.com for this information.

Note: For those interested, there was also a Batman matchbox cover produced.
