December 10, 2014: Five Reasons Why "Krypton" Might Not Implode
The New York Post has published an article titled "5 reasons why Superman prequel 'Krypton' might implode". Needless to say, being a Superman fan, I don't agree with the article's assessment of the situation, and have responded with my own "Why your '5 reasons why 'Krypton' might implode' are wrong". :)Go read the NYP article and then return here to read my response.
It's a movie concept ... being done on a TV budget
The article complains that there are no good TV shows set in outer space... because of TV budgets. There have been plenty of TV shows with amazing special effects in recent years. "Stargate SG-1" spent ten seasons exploring other planets and alien worlds. Shows like "The Flash", "Supernatural", "Warehouse 13" and other Sci-Fi/Superhero shows produce amazing special effects on a TV budget.
Superman's grandfather?
Yes, Superman's grandfather. Jor-El's father. Just because we don't know much about him from the comic books or other versions of the story doesn't mean he can't be an interesting character with an interesting life. And who's to say Jor-El, Lara, Zod and other better-known characters aren't involved somehow.
The NYP article by Reed Tucker opens with the question: "Does he get a senior citizen's discount on capes?" Can the writer of this article be any more prejudicial?! It's a prequel story about Kal-El's grandfather in his prime, possibly as a young man! "Senior citizen", really?!
No one will have superpowers
It's not about superpowers... It's called "Krypton". Not "Superman". Why would anyone expect this show to have people with superpowers? Listing this has a complaint against the show is like complaining that "Gotham" doesn't have Batman.
The Krypton stuff was the most boring part of the movies
Wrong again. Maybe the Krypton scenes in "Superman: The Movie" were a little slow, but the same complaints cannot be said of "Man of Steel". People were actually clamoring for a prequel MOVIE about Krypton, pestering Russell Crowe on Twitter about wanting it to happen.
There's a very interesting backstory to be told. Maybe "Krypton" the TV series won't use elements from "Man of Steel" (however with David Goyer involved it could), either way, novels like Kevin J. Anderson's "Last Days of Krypton" prove that there's very definitely a lot to enjoy about what happens on the planet before it explodes.
"We don't care", says Mr. Tucker in the NYP article. Speak for yourself! Plenty of us do care.
We know how this ends already...
Yes, the same could be said for "Smallville", yet that didn't stop that TV series continuing on for 10 seasons.
It's called a "prequel" for a reason. It's the story about what happened before the story that's already been told. Ever heard of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"? The "Star Wars" movies? "Red Dragon"? Or how about "The Hobbit"?
Just because you know how the story of Krypton ends, doesn't mean the journey getting there can't be interesting.
Mr. Tucker asks, "Will audiences invest in these characters, knowing nothing they do will matter in a few years?"
Did you not get invested in the prequel "Star Wars" movies even though you knew the future of characters like Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker? Did fans not worry about the fate of Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom, even though they knew he has to survive because he's in the films from his future which they'd already seen?
It's a TV series, about fictional characters... People get emotionally invested in them all the time, regardless of what the future might hold.
Some TV shows get cancelled before the writers are able to give them a satisfactory conclusion... If that happens with "Krypton" some time down the track, at least we'll know what the ultimate conclusion would have been.
