June 25, 2014: Geoff Johns Talks About His Run on "Superman"

Superman #32 Geoff Johns participated in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session via Reddit, where fans got to ask him all kinds of questions about his work, his career path, and his upcoming work on "Superman" with John Romita Jr., which starts with today's issue #32. Here are a few Superman-related highlights from the Geoff Johns AMA...

You can pick up Superman #32 without having read a single comic book in your life!

My run on Superman with John Romita Jr. is going to use all the New 52 stuff as a base. Love Grant's stuff. Greg is doing a great job. So although we'll be taking it in a slightly different direction, it'll be building on what's before. John and I really want to bring both the all-new and the classic together - what's important to Superman (and it's mostly what he stands for and what he does) and also throw things and characters at him he's never faced. You will see The Daily Planet, Lois, Jimmy and the gang more prominently. There will be more Clark interacting with his cast. But also a lot of new villains and heroes. So no event right now, just trying to do the best Superman book I can possibly do with JR.

We'll be expanding Superman's lore - look for some new characters to open doorways, literally, to new worlds.

We didn't ever talk about doing a new #1 for Superman since we're only on #32. Rather keep moving forward than going backwards.

There are a lot of characters I'd love to write on an ongoing basis, but right now I'm really enjoying being back on Superman.

On Superman having lost both sets of parents...

I think Superman dealing with no one in his life he can share it with that doesn't wear a costume is something to be explored - and will be in our run!

Regarding "Justice League"...

I love writing the Justice League - the first year was a lot of fun, and there were some conscious efforts to make it feel more open and new reader friendly. I think with Lex Luthor on the team, the upcoming AMAZO VIRUS arc and what we've got ahead for 2015 will make you jump for joy.

When asked about doing a crossover between Superman and the Justice League...

Right now, I'm going to keep Superman separate. The hope is to just have a kick ass Superman book that stands on its own for awhile. Maybe down the road we'll be part of something different, but for now it's just about the monthly book.

What's happening with Lex Luthor...

Lex will be primarily in Justice League for now - going head-to-head with Batman! (Lex's mistake...)

I really want to do things we haven't seen before - a lot of the beginning of the New 52, some of it was re-introductions or new origins and I want to go onto things that are going to be surprising. Lex Luthor as a member of the Justice League is super fun because you don't have any idea what he's going to do to the team. In fact, writing it there's so much that comes out of it that I never expected. Batman and him just become the center of the book and it's beyond enjoyable to work on. I hope you dig it. Lex brings a humor to it too... along with Shazam. His magic spell [in issue #31] is one I wish I could cast.

Supergirl and Superman...

Superman and Supergirl will become a support team for one another. Love writing them together so you'll see that sooner than later.
