April 7, 2014: Greg Pak Discusses "Action Comics"

Action Comics #30 Comicosity.com spoke with writer Greg Pak to discuss the current story playing out in "Action Comics". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Harrow's accusation toward Superman - that he is unable to make the hard, permanent decisions - plays into a lot of fan discussion over the past year about the ethics of a Superman that kills. What are your thoughts on that divide?

GP: I think it's a great question to always be asking. I will always be pushing Superman harder and harder in these stories. The stakes will always get higher, and I think that's one of the great eternal questions for heroic characters like this.

In real life, someone with Superman's powers, who has taken on this kind of responsibility, has its closest analogue in the President of the United States, in terms of someone whose every decision can have an impact on thousands or millions of people. And every president we've ever had, through his actions or orders, caused people to be killed. That's just a fact.

If you're going to step up to this level of power, you're going to deal with these life and death situations, and no matter what you choose, people are going to die. And so, in real life, that's how these things work. It's horrifying to me to even imagine having to be in that situation.

In the comics world, with Superman, I think it's an interesting challenge to push on him. Whether or not he can or should go all the way - that's a good question, and we'll continue to explore that!
