July 15, 2013: Jav Oliva Talks "Man of Steel" - Part 2

Man of Steel "Man of Steel" Storyboard Artist Jay Oliva spoke at length with VoicesFromKrypton.net about the movie, his thoughts on the final fight sequence with Zod, and possible ideas for more movies moving forward. Here's an excerpt from the second part of the 2-part interview...

It's funny, but I thought Zack would storyboard himself some of the harder sequences, but he just ended up taking a lot of the talking sequences; a lot of the scenes where we were in the Daily Planet. The Smallville scenes represent a lot of my stuff, although Zack had some initial storyboards and I was following his beats, but then elaborating on them and trying to figure out what might be missing. Zack would look at them and then say, "Let's do a shot where everyone locks their doors and closes their shutters, kind of like an old Western." But in terms of how the script was, and this is my whole point, I was very happy with the script. Although I have to say that very rarely is a script ever very descriptive in terms of the action. Most of the time it'll just lay out the main story beats, and then of course it will have all the dialogue. So in the end when Zod talks about ashes, that's in the script. A lot of the stuff I work on, the animated films, it just says, "Cool fight here." Which means that we'll often look at what the script has in beats; sometimes there could be something specific like "Zod learns how to fly," and there's some dialogue there. We have to figure out how to get from Zod talking about ashes and his soul being killed to the point where he's flying, because a lot of story has to happen in between. You have to emphasize that he can't fly and maybe that gives Superman an upper hand because he can. They're still toe-to-toe fighting, but then you get to those beats throughout the fight where Zod finally learns what he can do. Heat vision comes out of him and you weren't expecting that, and now he's able to hone his senses and figures out how to fly. Suddenly the upper hand that Superman had isn't there anymore.
