October 12, 2013: Description of Zack Snyder's Superman Animated Short

75th Anniversary Animated Short The long-awaited premiere of the special 75th Anniversary animated short created by "Man of Steel" Director Zack Snyder and "Superman: The Animated Series" Producer Bruce Timm took place at the Superman 75th Celebration panel at New York Comic Con today. Our own T. A. Ewart was in attendance and sent us the following description of the 2 minutes animated short.

The Superman Animated short debuted at the NYCC, and was resoundingly welcome. It's premise is to show Superman through the ages, in all of his forms, and it's does a top job in doing just that. It begins with Action Comics 1 and literally races on from there, set to the fanfare of John Williams immortal theme from Superman: The Movie. Superman flies through the Golden and Silver ages, with homages and acknowledgements to popular storylines and people, such as Turtle Jimmy Olsen and George Reeves. He enters the Bronze Age and the ring against a famous boxer, whose name remains unspoken, but whose arm does the talking. The hits continue with Superman: The Movie, Superman #75, STAS, Superman Blue/Red, the New 52, and finally Man of Steel, as Superman stands atop a giant 75 and the camera draws back leaving him to his legend.

The crowd was throughly involved, applauding and expected points and the reaction was overwhelming enough that the short was shown twice. Bruce Timm does a great job on the short, which is based on an idea from Zack Synder, and of you missed it, just keep watching DC Nation, where it's sure to be shown very soon.

Here's how the animated short was introduced:

Bruce Timm explained, "It was originally supposed to be a DC Nation short. We sat down and made this big laundry list - History of Superman. It quickly snowballed and became way bigger than a DC Nation short. The budget ballooned, I don't mind saying. It's going to be on multiple platforms, but the best way to watch it will be on the Blu-ray release."

While "loaded with Easter Eggs", Timm added that it was extremely difficult to pick and choose which parts of Superman's 75 year history to include. "There are things that didn't make the cut and we've tried to cover as many of the artists that contributed to Superman over the years," he said. "It's loaded with as much Superman joy over the years as we could put in."

Long-time Superman comic book editor Mike Carlin confessed to having got emotional the first time he watch it, saying it was like seeing his life flash before his eyes. "I was a reader for the 25th anniversary. I worked at DC for the 50th anniversary. I just got chills watching it again."

The short will also be included as part of the Bonus Material on the Blu-ray/DVD release of "Man of Steel" available in November.
