May 15, 2013: Review - "Superman: The Legend" Trading Cards

Superman: The Legend Display Late last month Cryptozoic Entertainment released a trading card series titled "Superman: The Legend". This is the first trading card series dedicated to Superman's comic books seen in 15 years!

The base set of 61 cards cover all facets of the Superman comic book universe, showcasing his family, friends, and villains, along with some well known locations, such as the Fortress of Solitude, Phantom Zone, and the Bottled City of Kandor.

The odd thing about this set of cards is that it really is a collection of imagery from the past 10-15 years or so. There's a mix of the New 52 versions of the characters (specifically Superman and Supergirl) and other modern interpretations, like General Zod from the "World of New Krypton" saga, while characters like Encantadora, Gangbuster, Guardian, Imperiex, and Riot also get a run.

All in all it's a great collection. There are some amazing looking images, with some speciality chase sets fans will want to collect. The text on the back of the cards are by comic book writer Adam Beechen, giving you an insight from an insider's perspective.

The care Sketch cards (which are only included in every 24 packs) have original art, which are different and sometimes a bit quirky. Each pack contains 5 cards, and there are 24 packs in a booster box. So purchasing a booster box ensures that you'll have one or more of these Sketch cards.

The Chase Sets include an Alternate Reality foil set (2:24), Secret Origins Puzzle (2:24), the Woman of the Superman Universe (2:24), and X-Ray Vision Cards (1:24). While Inserts you'll find include Sketch cards (1:24 packs), Printing Plate Cards (1:576), and Foil Parallel Cards (1:8). I was lucky enough to get 6 of the foil parallel cards, 2 each of the Alternate Reality foil cards, Secret Origin Puzzle cards, Women of the Superman Universe cards, and X-Ray Vision cards (but for the life of my I have no idea what the X-Ray Vision cards are supposed to do or how they work).

Binder The "Superman: The Legend" Binder features the familiar Jim Lee "Superman #204" comic book cover image, but also contains an exclusive foil promotional card inside. If you pick up the Diamond Previews exclusive binder it contains reprints of 9 exclusive sketch cards.

I've always been a fan of collecting Trading Cards, so I was excited about this "Superman: The Legend" release. It's not an earth-shattering collection, but it's definitely worth adding to your collection.

Grab your "Superman: The Legend" Trading Cards from the Superman Homepage Online Store.
