April 4, 2013: RIP Carmine Infantino and Richard Griffiths

Superman #199 We're sad to report that legendary comic book artist Carmine Infantino passed away today, one month shy of his 88th birthday.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 24, 1925, Infantino was a major force in the creation of the Silver Age of comic books, who also worked as an Editorial Director and Publisher at DC Comics.

"So sad to learn of the passing of another comic book legend," wrote artist George Perez via Facebook. "Carmine Infantino was one of the great influential artists in the history of the medium and I will always look upon his Adam Strange, Flash and Space Museum stories as wondrous examples of fantasy made even more magical at the hands of a master. RIP, Carmine."

In more sad news, actor Richard Griffiths, best known as Uncle Vernon from the Harry Potter films, passed away earlier this week, aged 65. Superman fans will remember him as one of the three terrorists armed with a nuclear bomb atop the Eiffel Tower in Superman II.

The Superman Homepage extends its condolences to the family and friends of both great men.
