March 22, 2013: NY Times Reviews Encores! Superman Musical

Superman Musical The New York Times has published a review of Encores! revival of the musical "It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman", currently enjoying a run of seven performances at the New York City Center from March 20 through 24. Here's an excerpt from the review...

For the record, there are no life-and-limb-threatening aeronautics in "Superman," as there are in "Spider-Man." The only flying done in this version is by a cardboard effigy of the title character, which in truth isn't all that different from the flesh-and-blood version, played by Edward Watts.

I mean that as a compliment. Being flat and amusing at the same time is no mean feat for an actor. Yet Mr. Rando's judiciously assembled cast members are consistently both.

They include, in addition to Mr. Watts as a beautiful lunkhead of an action hero, David Pittu as his mad-scientist nemesis and Jenny Powers, in splendid voice, as the ever-hopeful girl reporter Lois Lane. They never condescend to putting quotation marks around their characters, who emerge as "honestly sincere" (to borrow a lyric from "Bye Bye Birdie," another Strauss and Adams musical).

Will Swenson, in a part created by Jack Cassidy, is appetizingly smarmy as an egomaniacal newspaper columnist with a vaudevillian streak, while the peppy Alli Mauzey has lungs of steel as his long-suffering sidekick, a role originated by the young Linda Lavin, if you please. And did I mention the back-flipping team of Chinese acrobats that the mad scientist enlists in his plot against the big guy?

Ms. Mauzey does well by "Possibilities," the one number from the score that has had any significant afterlife. Performed with gently insinuating pizazz by the Encores! orchestra, directed by Rob Berman, most of the songs are clever, catchy and so light that they float out of mind.
