February 23, 2013: Catholic Priest Wears Superhero Tunics

Priest Fr. Humberto Alvarez, a Catholic priest in the village of Ojo de Agua in Saltillo, Mexico, has incorporated Superman and other superheroes into his church wardrobe in an effort to appeal to the younger members of his parish.

Each Sunday Fr. Alvarez dons his white tunic adorned with images of Superman, Batman, and Spider-man, and arms himself with a water pistol filled with holy water.

In an interview with Zocalo magazine the unconventional, yet popular priest explained, "We talk about attitudes of struggle and effort to achieve, overcome fears, find peace and forgiveness."

While using superheroes in church hasn't been accepted by everyone in the village, he notes, "Jesus was different and always sought justice, we must follow his example."
