January 12, 2013: Statements Following WB's Win in Copyright Battle

Superman Court Case As we reported on Friday, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals ruled unanimously on Thursday that the Siegel family must abide by a letter written by their attorney in 2001 accepting an offer put to them by Warner Bros. for their 50% share of the rights to Superman.

"Statements from the attorneys for both parties establish that the parties had undertaken years of negotiations, that they had resolved the last outstanding point in the deal during a conversation on Oct. 15, 2001, and that the letter accurately reflected the material terms they had orally agreed to on that day," Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote for the panel.

A prepared statement by Warner Bros. reflects their satisfaction in the outcome...

"This is a great day for Superman, for his fans, for DC Entertainment and for Warner Bros. Today's ruling vindicates DC Comics' long-held position that it entered into a binding agreement with the Jerry Siegel family in 2001."

"The Court's decision paves the way for the Siegels finally to receive the compensation they negotiated for and which DC has been prepared to pay for over a decade."

"We are extremely pleased that Superman's adventures can continue to be enjoyed across all media platforms worldwide for generations to come."

Jerry Siegel's daughter, Laura Siegel Larson made no comment on this decision, however she did release the following statement about Superman...

"My father, writer and Superman creator Jerry Siegel, gave the world its greatest superhero, a character who could do what no earthling could do," she said. "He and artist Joe Shuster created Superman, Clark Kent, Lois Lane and many other characters to give all of us hope and courage that good could triumph over evil, that justice could be achieved despite impossible odds and to inspire all of us to find strength and heroism in ourselves."
