May 30, 2012: Brandon Routh Was Very Protective of Superman Image

Canada.com spoke with Brandon Routh ahead of the launch of his new film "Crooked Arrows", and asked him how he felt about there not being a sequel to "Superman Returns".

"Either you wilt in the face of it. Or you get stronger. So I had to realize this may not be the path I was expecting, but maybe it's a better path. So instead of pouting about it, you know, get a stiff upper lip and move on. I am a stronger person for all of it."

Not only stronger, Routh says he's been released from the yolk of a hefty alter-ego.

"We were supposed to do more (Superman movies) but I don't know what the reality would have been like. I don't know if that would have been better for me or not. The fact is this is where I am now," he says.

"And maybe this is a better place. You know, I turned down a lot of roles because I thought there was going to be another Superman movie and I was very, very protective of that image and that character because he doesn't wear a mask."

Routh says he's happy he no longer has to worry about protecting the wholesome image of Clark Kent, even if that leaves him without a mega-budget shingle to define his professional identity.

In "Crooked Arrows" (out June 1) Routh stars as Joe Logan, a half-Native lacrosse star who now runs the local casino and is looking to make it bigger. Yet, in order to get the permit to expand from the band council, he has to pass a spiritual test selected by his father.
