March 20, 2012: "Superman vs. The Elite" Interview with Michael Chang

Michael Chang Mary Anne Butler attended the world premiere of "Superman vs. The Elite" on behalf of the Superman Homepage, and caught up with Director Michael Chang to discuss the animated movie.

How did you come to be involved with this project?

I was asked if I wanted to handle it. I enjoyed the script, and the next week I was on my way to Japan talking to animators. Really got to know the script well, the more I read it the more I liked it. Before story boarding started, one of the directors had stepped down, most of the script had been approved, a little here and there that needed to be edited, really.

How closely does it follow the original comic?

Pretty much the original comic story line, had to make it 70 minutes, I think we a managed to catch the feeling of the comics.

How did this compare to working on the TV shows for you?

It's like doing three episodes at once. A lot of juggling. Story boarding overseas that was a new experience for me. Sometimes projects aren't greenlit until later, and that affects everything.

What can we expect to see different from the comic?

New for Superman - to see it come to life. It was a little more violent than I had thought. Trying to keep those named characters the same at their core, to have that essence, Bruce Tim helped me a lot with that.

Did you have a say in casting?

I did some of the casting, George Newburn (Superman) was already in place, Pauley Perrette (Lois Lane) had that sass, that strength that Lois has. They did really well as diverse as they were.

The process was very much emotion vs action. Adding some of those actions scenes helped, adding more of the character moments was to drive what the story was about. I arrived during the 7th version of the script, story.

How much freedom have you had on your recent projects?

A lot of creative freedom with Superman, Brave and the Bold, Teen Titans was my growth spurt as an artist, everyone fed off of it.

What's with the rating? How does that work for this type of story?

Balance of violence and comedic moments. We tried to lighten it, it's not all dark. PG13 - we were surprised with how much we could get away with.
