September 12, 2012: Funky Winkerbean Tackles "Superman: Grounded"

The "Funky Winkerbean" comic strip is one many Superman fans are familiar with. Back in 2008 creator Tom Batiuk started an 18 strip run on the story of his comic book writer character Pete Roberts jumping from Marvel to take on the writing duties for DC Comics' "Superman".

Apparently Batiuk has a year's worth of strips ready for publication finished in advance, which means the Funky Winkerbean strip is just now documenting his reaction to writer J. Michael Straczynski leaving his gig writing the "Grounded" story line for the "Superman" comic book after only four issues.

Funky Winkerbean

ComicsAlliance explaines further...

For those of you who aren't familiar with the strip, the characters in that last panel are Pete Roberts, a writer who is perpetually suffering from deadline pressure due to his gig writing Superman comics, and an actual, possibly imaginary super-villain called the Lord of the Late who exists only to inflict said deadlines on the poor freelancer. I probably don't need to say it, but Pete is the one who doesn't look like the Time Trapper.

Pete is, of course, standing in for real-life writer Chris Roberson, who was tapped to finish "Grounded."
