July 27, 2011: Ohio Wants Superman License Plates

Ohio License Plate The Siegel and Shuster Society is petitioning to have Superman's famous "S" insignia grace specialty license plates for the state of Ohio, with the legend "Ohio - Birthplace of Superman".

The society needs to collect at least 500 names on petitions as a first step. Republican state Sen. Tom Patton of Strongsville agreed to propose the plate to the legislature if enough signatures are gathered, the newspaper reported.

Petitions are in Cleveland area comic shops and will be circulated outside the Palace Theatre in Cleveland during three Sundays in August during showings of the films "Batman," ''Superman," and "Spider-Man," Mike Olszewski, president of the society, said.

The society hopes to have the license plates available by 2013, the 75th anniversary of the first appearance of Superman in "Action Comics" No. 1.

Specialty plates usually cost between $25 and $35 more than standard plates. If approved, the plates would be purchased from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
