Brave & Bold #1

February 3, 2009: Lex Luthor & Power Girl in "Batman: The Brave & the Bold #1"

Released last Wednesday, Batman: The Brave and the Bold #1 is a comic book companion to the new Cartoon Network animated series of the same name. So far, amid lots of heroes working alongside Batman on the lighter-toned team-up show, Superman has only come up by name.

The new comic doesn't necessarily get us any closer to Big Blue himself. The cover depicts Batman surrounded by face shots of other super-types, but Superman isn't one of those faces -- odder given Wonder Woman is.

However, much of Superman's world is validated in the story inside. Batman teams up with Power Girl to battle Lex Luthor. In the issue, the good guys discuss Luthor's relationship with Superman. Bats and PG acknowledge that Superman is Lex's greatest enemy. Lex uses a red solar weapon reserved for Superman to weaken Power Girl. And Power Girl hails from Krypton like Superman, just the Krypton of a parallel universe, which makes her virtually as powerful as Superman.

Batman: B&B #1 is written by Matt Wayne. Wayne wrote Batman: B&B episode "Journey to the Center of the Bat!", the first season's ninth episode. Whether coincidental or intentional, the Wayne-penned episode and the Wayne-penned debut comic book issue both went pubilc the same week. Wayne has also written for other DC animated series including Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Krypto the Superdog, and The Legion of Superheroes.

It remains to be seen if Superman will appear either in the B&B comic book or on the Cartoon Network show. Or both. Or neither. If an announcement regaring Superman on "B&B" is made, you can be sure it'll be reported right here on the Superman Homepage.
