January 10, 2008: People's Choice Award Winners

By Barry Freiman

The People's Choice Awards were given out Tuesday night and, while "Smallville" wasn't nominated, there were some Superman-related wins. Best TV Drama went to "House", a show created by "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer. "House" stars Hugh Laurie who was initially cast as Perry White in "Superman Returns". Laurie had to back out of the cast of the movie in order to be able to keep playing "House" and was replaced on "Superman Returns" by Frank Langella.

Best TV Comedy went to "Two and a Half Men". The sitcom of course co-stars Charlie Sheen with Jon Cryer. Superman fans best remember Cryer for his 1987 role as Lex Luthor's nephew Lenny Luthor in the ill-fated "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace".

Best Reality Show went to "Dancing with the Stars". One of this past season's dancing stars was actress Jane Seymour, who played Genevieve Teague during the fourth season of "Smallville" and is slated to return to "Smallville" this year.

Best Game Show went to "Deal or No Deal". The NBC game show is hosted by Howie Mandel. Mandel played fifth dimensional imp Mr. Mxyzptlk on "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" in 1996 episode "Twas the Night Before Mxymas".

Leading Man honors went to Joaquin Phoenix. One of Phoenix's first TV roles was as Billy Hercules on the syndicated "The Adventures of Superboy" live-action show in the first-season episode "Little Hercules".

Song from a Soundtrack honors went to "You Can't Stop the Beat" from "Hairspray". One of the stars of "Hairspray" was James Marsden -- Richard White in "Superman Returns".

And that's not even mentioning wins for Justin Timberlake (who was rumored to be in the running for both the Superman and Jimmy Olsen roles in an unproduced Superman film), Drew Barrymore (who played one of Two-Face's molls in "Batman Forever", the first film in the Batman franchise to acknowledge the existence of Superman's world with a reference to the city of Metropolis), and George Clooney (played Batman in "Batman and Robin" and tells an obnoxious Boy Wonder that "This is why Superman works alone").

Congrats to all the super-winners.
