October 20, 2007: Geoff Johns Reveals Details on Up-Coming Superman Comics

IGN.com caught up with Geoff Johns to ask him a series of questions about his comic book work, including what's in store on his "Superman" run. Here's a portion of the interview...

Q: Since you began writing Superman after Infinite Crisis, you've been hinting at the larger changes that event had on Superman's back-story. Do you have any future plans to dive fully into a story that would explain Superman's childhood in greater detail?

Johns: Yeah, 2008 is kind of going to be the year to do it. There are going to be some very big Superman plans coming out in early 2008 and throughout 2008. Nobody has been happy with the schedule for Superman - not us, the retailers or the readers - and now that the schedule is under control, we're going to be pushing the Superman books pretty far. In '08, I'd like to do what we've done with Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps to the Superman books.

Q: So you don't have any plans to leave Superman anytime soon?

Johns: No, Gary Frank and I are sticking around for the long haul. I just talked to Gary Frank today, and he's so excited about this book. His stuff is unbelievable, as you've already seen. We've got long term plans to stick around, and we'd like to be on the book for years.

Action Comics #861 Geoff Johns also chats with Newsarama.com about up-coming Superman comics.

Q: OK, back to Action Comics. Looking at the solicitation for these issues, you're named as a solo writer on this story arc. Why just you? And will Richard Donner be working with you again on future Action Comics stories?

GJ: The idea was always for me to handle this arc solo - it's got a lot of history to research before tackling the story and, quite honestly, I've been dying to work with the Legion for years. Dick will be back depending on his schedule.

Q: This story also marks the start of the new ongoing artist for Action Comics, Gary Frank. Can you talk about Gary's art on these issues?

GJ: Gary is amazing. For me, he's the perfect Superman artist because he combines this brilliant, very clean, modern style, but he's got hints of both Curt Swan and Christopher Reeve influences throughout the Superman stuff. So visually, you see that he's the heir apparent for Superman, and for all the Superman characters. It's like, to me, I look at it and say, of course he should be drawing Superman. And for a guy like Gary, who did all the wonderful designing and powerful work for Supreme Power, coming in and doing his take on the Legion, reintroducing the original Legion, it's incredible to see.
