July 27, 2007: SDCC Panel Report - “DC Countdown... To The End?” & “DC Group Therapy”

Thursday at the San Diego Comic Con saw DC Comics hold two main panels: DC Countdown... To The End?" and "DC Group Therapy".

"DC Countdown... To The End?" was moderated by Dan DiDio, who sat with fellow panel members (editors) Mike Martz and Mike Carlin, "History of the Multiverse" writer/artist Dan Jurgens, artist Jim Califiore, and writers Sean McKeever, Tony Bedard, Adam Beechen, Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Paul Dini.

The main highlights for Superman fans were:

Q: Why are there 2 different versions of the Legion?
A: It will be explained in detail next year (which also happens to be the Legion's 50th anniversary).

Q: Was the timing of the Jimmy Olsen Showcase Trade Paperback release with Jimmy's powers manifesting in Countdown intentional?
A: Yes, definitely.

Q: What steps are being taken to make the multiverse accessible this time around?
A: The multiverse will be unveiled slowly with DCU characters visiting other worlds.

Q: Will any other characters from the animated series make it into the DCU proper?
A: No plans at present.

Q: Will the current Superman origin be explained soon?
A: Yes.

DC's other panel on Thursday was the "DC Group Therapy" panel with Dan DiDio, writers Gail Simone, Geoff Johns, Sean McKeever, editors Eddie Berganza, and Michael Siglain.

Highlights from this panel included:

Eddie Berganza talked about the end of Brad Meltzer's run on Justice League of America, which led to new writer Dwayne McDuffie joining the panel.

DiDio asked McDuffie about what he had planned, and said he liked the characters, but might want to "increase the level of action a little bit."

As for whether Conner Kent was really dead, DiDio replied, "Permanently temporarily dead."

Seems DC can't decide whether Superman/Batman is in or out of continuity, with Eddie Berganza stating that the book will tie-in to Countdown soon, while also revealing that the next arc of Superman/Batman after Alan Burnett will be by Michael Green (writer on the TV show Heroes).
