Superman on The Batman

June 20, 2007: Alan Burnett Talks Cartoons to Comics

Newsarama.com has published an interview with Alan Burnett, writer and director on many animated TV shows, including "Super Friends", "Superman: The Animated Series", "Batman: The Animated Series", "Batman Beyond", and "Krypto The Superdog", who is now about to start a run on the "Superman/Batman" comic book with artist Dustin Nguyen. Here's a few excerpts from the interview...

Q: So are your Superman and Batman similar to the DCAU versions or something else?

AB: I don't know where my Supes and Bats start or DC's end. I just took everything from the comics I could. Our Batman is an amalgamation of all the Batmans that have ever existed. We borrowed a little Bill Finger here, some Denny O'Neill there. I've always liked the Steve Englehardt stories. I like the way he involved women in his stories. Actually, I really get into that later in the series. It will take a while, but it will really lock in. That's the spirit that I have in my head. I don't want to give away too much on the series, but I did have a lot of fun writing it. I really surprised myself on it.

Superman/Batman #37 Q: How did you find writing a comic compared to an animated episode?

AB: I found it easy. When I write cartoons I think in terms of animators really. I think in terms of the number of lines he has to draw and then try to stage it so it's not too complicated. What many people don't realize is something as simple as a horse galloping through a scene, you can save a lot of work by drawing it only from the hips up. You don't have to do the legs.

With comics I'm free from that restriction. It's like thinking in terms of storyboards. But being free of the animation restrictions, if I want to have the cavalry charge, I can really have a whole cavalry charge.

He also confirms that Superman will appear in the two-part season opener of "The Batman" animated series, with George Newbern (Superman), Dana Delany (Lois Lane) and Clancy Brown (Lex Luthor) returning to voice their characters...

AB: I think what you're going to see this year is a lot of team-ups. I mean the opening of the season will be a two-parter with Superman.

Q: So Big Blue finally shows up?

AB: Big Blue finally shows up.

Q: How would you describe the relationship between the two this time compared to past ones?

AB: I would say this time Superman will be the one that's the more stand-offish. Batman is a bit friendlier.
