Supergirl #16

February 8, 2007: Ale Garza to Draw Supergirl

"Supergirl" is set for a shift in creative team with May's #16 issue of the title. Current writer Joe Kelly will be joined by co-writer Mark Sable and new artist Ale Garza. Newsarama spoke with Ale about coming on board the Supergirl comic book. Here's part of the interview...

Q: As you approach the character, how do you view her? For instance, as you look at her, how old is she? How does that inform your approach to her?

AG: I approach her for what she is - a somewhere between 16-18 years old, bitter, jaded teenage girl. She's not happy to be here, at least not yet. I get the feeling that she just wants to find a place for herself in this world. That being invisible isn't that bad of a thing. I can relate, sometimes I wish I could just disappear. However, like me, she has responsibilities, and she can't just vanish. Although my responsibilities usually just consist of me teasing my studio mates...except for Joel...he's so handsome... back to her though, more than anything I want her to emote through her expressions. But I don't feel this should be a cheesecake book. It should have heart, and emotion.

Q: That said, since her inception and then, being drawn by Ian Churchill, she's had her fair share of critics that said she was too waifish, showing too much...er...pelvic area, and all the rest... So you're not looking to play that angle up?

AG: Honestly most people who know my previous work like Eve Protomecha and Skye Runner probably think that they're gonna be getting Supergirl Cinemax style. However, that will not, I stress not be the case. Supergirl is a DC icon, and I feel she should be presented as such. Does that mean that i won't be edgy? No. I definitely want to push the envelope, as far as my art goes. I feel there are ways to make some of the things people have criticized in the past work. I appreciate both Ian and Mike's [Turner] art, but for mine, to leave my mark, I'm looking to create a new impression on the character.
