JLU Season 1 DVD

October 25, 2006: “Justice League Unlimited: Season One” DVD Review

Reviewed by: Steve Younis

On October 24th Warner Home Video released "Justice League Unlimited: Season One" on DVD.

Interestingly, while season one of JLU actually only had 13 episodes (ending with part 2 of "The Once and Future Thing"), this DVD collection includes 26 episodes, adding the 13 episodes from the second season of JLU into the collection (from "The Cat and the Canary" right through to "Epilogue"). It is assumed that the next volume of JLU episodes released on DVD will be the final 13 episodes from the final season of the series.

I won't review all 26 episodes in this DVD collection, as reviews of all the JLU episodes can already be found on this website. It is worth noting however that unlike the "Justice League" DVDs, the episodes in this collection are presented in anamorphic widescreen.

Firstly, the DVD cover features the prominant Justice League characters, including Supergirl, Green Arrow and Dr Fate. Interestingly Superman appears as he did in the earlier "Justice League" cartoons, with the very prominant facial lines, where as in the "Justice League Unlimited" episodes they re-designed his features to be less angular and more in line with his appearance in "Superman: The Animated Series".

The internal packaging is quite well designed, with all the episodes and special features clearly outlined on the back cover of the internal slip. The 4 DVD discs picture Batman, Black Canary, Aquaman, and Wildcat.

Commentary is presented on only two episodes, "This Little Piggy" and "The Return". Rumor has it that some of the show's creators weren't aware that the 2nd season episodes were being included in this "Season One" DVD collection, which is why there aren't more episodes with the commentary feature.

Other Special Features include a short interview documentary on Disc 1 called "And Justice For All" which looks at the process of revamping the series to include more characters. I enjoyed hearing the creators of the series speek with such passion for the characters and it's evident they not only thoroughly enjoyed working on this series, but have huge respect for the DCU characters.

The only other special feature is found on Disc 4. Titled "Themes of Justice" this feature is a collection of musical themes from various episodes, allowing you to listen to the great music while viewing some specific scenes from the episode the music featured in. You tend not to notice the music so much while watching the episode normally, so this feature is a nice way to appreciate the excellent musical score included in the series.

All in all this DVD collection is a must-have for any animated "Justice League" fan. With 26 episodes in the one collection, you can't go wrong.
