August 7, 2006: Nicieza Talks “Action Comics”

The Pulse caught up with writer Fabian Nicieza to ask him what it's like working on "Action Comics" with Kurt Busiek. Here's a portion of the interview...

Q: How do you regard Superman? How has that changed in this One Year Later world - if at all?

NICIEZA: He is the perfect man made imperfect by the challenge of his desire to help all others. His ability to assume such an overwhelming burden of responsibility is both the best thing about him and his Achilles Heel.

If anything, I think the OYL issues and his "powerless year," have shown that you can take the "super" out of the "man," but you can't stop him from doing whatever it takes to make a difference in any way possible.

Clark Kent spent months trying to find a way to regain his powers, then began to realize how much of a difference he can make as a reporter. All the energy, all the discipline, all the "burden of responsibility" he displayed day in and day out as Superman were now being channeled by Clark into his reporting. I think that was a very refreshing outlook and really did a nice job showing the mettle of the man beyond the cape and costume.

Q: What's the focus of your "Back in Action" story?

NICIEZA: Apparently, getting back in action. [grins]

Q: Funny guy! Give us a few teasers or no bananas for you!

NICIEZA: Superman has just returned to the scene, but it was a Metropolis-specific "resurrection." The rest of the country, the rest of the world -- superheroes and supervillains alike -- have seen it happen, but they haven't seen him in action.

Remember, the last time he "went away," he came back as four different people, none of which turned out to be him, so, naturally, there is skepticism.

During the course of the story, when forced to confront the doubts about him, will he be able to rise above them? Based on his track record, my bet will be that he does...
