June 23, 2005: Lois & Clark: Season 1 DVD Review

As we've already reported some time ago, the first season of "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" is now available on DVD. I received mine the other day, sat down and watched a few episodes and all the Special Features.

The first thing that should be mentioned is the nice metalic box cover art of the DVD set. I'm sure it'll attract some shelf-attention in stores.

The 6 discs are presented in 3 panels within the box, discs 1 and 2 feature an image of Dean Cain, discs 3 and 4 depict both Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher, while discs 5 and 6 are of Teri on her own.

All 21 episodes of Season 1 are presented in this collection, and it was fun re-living these early episodes and remembering how enjoyable they were.

Discs 1 and 6 offer some Special Features. Disc 1 has Dean Cain, Executive Producer Deborah Joy LeVine, and Director Robert Butler offering commentary over the Pilot episode. It also features an interesting documentary from Deborah Joy LeVine recalling the Pilot Presentation she put together for the San Diego Comic Con, before presenting that clip for us to watch.

The bonus material on disc 6 includes a Retrospective Documentary on the making of "Lois & Clark", which includes interviews with Deborah Joy LeVine, Dean Cain, Teri Hatcher, John Shea, K Callan, Eddie Jones, and other crew members. This documentary delves into the casting process and reveals how Clark, Lois, and Lex were cast and the decision processes involved, there's discussions on the costume design for the Superman costume, issues and problems with the cape, and a look at all the other major cast members, including Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant, and Jonathan and Martha Kent.

The second documentary on disc 6 is a behind-the-scenes look at the special effects on the series, from flying, floating, walking up walls, heat-vision and x-ray vision.

There's a hidden feature too, something I just happened across (commonly known as an Easter Egg)... On disc 6, highlight the "Taking Flight: The Visual Effects of Lois & Clark" menu item in the Special Features section, and click the left arrow button on your DVD player's remote control. This will highlight a previously unseen "Extra! Extra!" menu item. Pressing Play or OK on your remote when this menu item is highlighted plays an extra interview where K Callan relates an interesting holiday experience she had while in Ireland.

Much hype has surrounded the fact that "Crusade", the Season 4 premiere episode of "Smallville", is included on an extra disc inserted into the "Lois & Clark" Season 1 DVD set. This disc is Volume 7 of the "Celebrating 50 Years of the Best Shows on Television" commemorative DVD collection released by Warner Bros. It should be noted that this disc is only available in limited quantities, and is NOT in every "Lois & Clark" Season 1 DVD set. The plastic wrap surrounding this box set clearly states "While supplies last".

"Lois & Clark: The Complete First Season" on DVD is an excellent collection and well worth buying.
