October 30, 2005: Brandon's Parents Visit Him in Australia

BrandonRouth.com have posted an article originally published in the October 6th edition of the Norwalk, Iowan newspaper "North Warren Town and County News". The article is all about Brandon Routh's parents, Ron and Katie, coming to Australia to spend time with their son as he worked on "Superman Returns". Here are excerpts from the article...

Naturally the highlight of the trip was visiting BJ and being on the set everyday at the Fox studio. They enjoyed seeing how movies are made and watching carpenters as they built sets.

"We were just treated like royalty", says Katie, "and we had unlimited access to the set." But, then of course - they are royalty of sorts. I mean, when you are mom and dad of Superman, that really must put you right up there! The Norwalk couple said everyone was great. "They really took good care of us offering us tea and biscuits, with a special place where we could sit and watch a monitor - we wanted for nothing. We even had seats right behind Director Bryan Singer, where we could watch him at work."

Katie said it was so fun to watch the 60-75 people who are on the set every day. "Seeing the filming being done over and over and how the intricacies of having everything lined up perfectly from one shoot to another was fascinating. It didn't make any difference if it was getting Superman's curl just right or having spots marked on the wall and ceiling to make sure Superman was always flying in the right angle for matching up the previous days shoot. If something wasn't just perfect, the whole production stopped. It didn't matter if they were fixing 'the curl' or pulleys that let BJ fly. Everyone just stopped and waited - no matter how long it took to fix the problem. Then just like magic - the whole production moved forward, just as if nothing happened."

In speaking of the movie's star, Katie said, "He will always be our BJ, but finally watching him in the action of filming and seeing how great he was being treated made this whole experience seem a little more real. It was obvious the crew had high regard for BJ's work ethic and he always maintained a sense of professionalism even though he was working long days, 6:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., and repeating scenes."

"And all the people right here in Norwalk, who have known BJ since he was little - like our neighbors, teachers and church family - they have all had a part in making him who he is and in teaching him our mid-west values", said his parents.

Ron noted that BJ knows that Superman is an icon character and this puts him in a responsible position because kids want to be like Superman. "He will handle it well", his father added.
