November 10, 2004: Schneider Talks About Why He Joined “Smallville”

John Schneider, who plays Jonathan Kent on "Smallville" recently spoke with Tennessean.com and spoke about why he decided that the show was for him...

One of the reasons he wanted to do Smallville was because of the positive way it depicts parenthood, especially fatherhood, Schneider says.

"For a long time I'd said - sometimes too publicly, I think - that the greatest disservice on television was how parents were being portrayed and the greatest disserve within that disservice was how fathers were being depicted. My dad, the idiot, who can't make it through the day if it weren't for the innate intelligence of a 16-year-old, which was not only an inaccurate picture of what was going on in my house, but a damaging image to have in your living room," he says.

"When I read the pilot for Smallville it was like a tremendous light had gone on. These guys, Miles (Millar) and Al (Gough) had written a tremendous pilot that really understood the importance of parenting and the modeling of any child. But to have that child wind up being Superman was a great message to send out to everybody, so I definitely wanted to be involved in that."
