September 21, 2004: TV Guide Looks at the Legacy of Lois Lane

The latest issue of the American "TV Guide", dated September 26th - October 2nd, (which features a cover story on the TV series "CSI:NY") includes a pictorial titled "Memory Lane," with photos of Phyllis Coates, Noel Neill, Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Dana Delaney (voice for "Superman: The Animated Series"), and Erica Durance (of "Smallville").

There's even a full-page still of George Reeves (as Superman) and Noel Neill from "The Magic Secret" on the contents page of this issue.

Unfortunately, the writer of this article (Michael Davis) makes no mention of Joan Alexander (who voice Lois in the 1940s radio seroes), Patricia Marand (from the Broadway musical), Leslie Ann Warren (the television adaptation of the musical), or any of the other animated Lois voice talents. The author also neglected to mention that Noel Neill preceded Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane in the 1948 movie serial "Superman" and its 1950 sequel "Atom Man vs. Superman".

The pictorial's introductory text reads:

"Down through the decades, Lois Lane has changed almost as often as Clark Kent went to that Daily Planet broom closet. Now comes a new Lois in sultry Canadian actress Erica Durance, who plays her as an inquisitive newcomer to Smallville seeking answers to her cousin Chloe's disappearance. By season's end, she'll add some crackle to a town that never stays quiet for long.

"As it's been for more than 50 years of Superman on screen, Lois Lane stirs things up. She's got questions and she'll get answers, regardless of the consequences. That's the common denominator among the actresses who have played her. The differences are many, thanks to a Superman mythology that adapts to the times and allows interpretations of what is truth, justice, and the American way."
