Smallville Season 4

August 31, 2004: Smallville Shares Dailies, Review Cuts Using Media.net Networked Services

I know many readers of this site are film students or are interested in the technical details surrounding film and television production. The following Press Release was sent out by Media.net regarding their continued involvement with the editing of "Smallville" episodes, and may be of interest to some "Smallville" fans...

Media.net services chosen for fourth consecutive season to streamline editorial and review processes between Vancouver shooting location and Los Angeles-based editors

Media.net, developer of the leading secure network and services that facilitate media sharing among the world's major film and television production centers, today announced that the WB Network's "Smallville" has again chosen to share dailies and review versions digitally across locations in Vancouver and Los Angeles, using Media.net's secure networked services.  Now heading into its fourth season, the Emmy award-winning production has been using Media.net services since its very first episode.

During shooting in Vancouver, Rainmaker Entertainment Group uses the Media.net Edit System Dailies and Digital Dailies applications to send MPEG dailies to producers and directors, and pre-digitized Avid files directly to "Smallville" editors in Los Angeles. Upon arriving in the cutting room, editors are able to start cutting immediately, rather than waiting for tape shipments to clear customs and arrive at the cutting room, and for media to be digitized. When edited material is ready for review, "Smallville" editors publish the digitally encoded version using Media.net's Edit Review application, where it can be accessed by producers, directors or other studio personnel on desktop viewing systems for further distribution, review and approval.

"Smallville" Associate Producer Tom Flores said, "Time is a huge factor in a production like "Smallville," since we shoot in Canada. If we used Fed Ex to ship cassettes we'd lose a full day - every day - when you factor in not only shipping, but digitizing tapes on site in the cutting room.  We have to work faster than that. For the pilot episode over three years ago, we tried a different solution to share digital dailies, but it was extremely costly and pretty inflexible, since it required us to schedule the times when we would send media. Media.net solved both of those problems. Since the service can deliver pre-digitized Avid files, we're cutting the minute the files arrive on our systems. And since there are no time restrictions on the sending side, Rainmaker can just deliver the files as soon as dailies dubs are run from the telecine master.  Media.net has been a fast, reliable solution for us since the very first episode. We can't imagine working any other way."

Media.net CEO, Scott Tolleson, noted, "Smallville's" workflow takes advantage of Media.net services for sharing media both internationally and locally, just across the lot.  The show is one of our longest-standing customers and we're pleased to provide a digital infrastructure to support their high-speed workflow again this season."
