Lane Smith

May 31, 2004: Lane Smith Diagnosed with ALS

I received an email alerting me to the fact that actor Lane Smith, best known to Superman fans as the gruff but lovable Perry White in the TV series "Lois & Clark", has been diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. When these cells die, voluntary muscle control and movement dies with them. Patients in the later stages of the disease are totally paralyzed, yet in most cases, their mind remains sharp and alert.

Lane Smith's family asks you all for your prayers in this difficult time. Feel free to post any well wishes in the SHout Box below, and we will endeavor to pass them on to Lane and his family.
