April 21, 2004: Stan Berkowitz on Superheroes and His Career

Berkowitz talked to Toon Zone about his career, writing for some of the best and most iconic animated series of the last decade. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: What did you like to read or watch as a kid?

A: The George Reeves Superman was my first favorite, and I can't even remember a time when I wasn't watching it. That's how far back it goes for me.

I also loved the Fleischer Superman cartoons, but remember them as darker and scarier than the live action show. The Republic and Columbia serials from the forties and early fifties were still kicking around on TV and in theaters at Saturday matinees when I was a kid, and I was a huge fan of Rocketman/Commando Cody and the two Batman serials, though even at age 10, I felt they were inexcusably cheap (what, no Batmobile?)

When I was 8, my father gave me my two first comic books -- Detective and Adventure (Batman and Superboy). Batman became my favorite (more identifiable than Superboy), but he was soon supplanted by the more sci-fi oriented Hal Jordan Green Lantern and the Barry Allen Flash. Then came the Justice League, the best comic of all, I felt.

By the time I was 13, I'd drifted away from comics. Looking back, the reason is clear: my father had started bringing home the James Bond books, and they were far more interesting to a pubescent boy than anything created under the Comics Code could be.

Q: When did you make the move into animation?

A: My work on the Superboy series led to two years as a writer on the Spider-Man show, and that led me to Warner Bros. Animation. Alan Burnett and Paul Dini were assembling a writing staff for Superman, and I sent them a script I'd written for Superboy. They liked it, gave me a script assignment ("The Way of All Flesh"), and then they hired me to be on staff.
