November 1, 2003: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERMAN HOMEPAGE!!!
The Superman Homepage celebrates its 9th birthday this month! That means if the website was a dog it'd be 49 years old, and not far from being put down. If it was a human, it'd be in the middle of Elementary School (or Primary School as it's called here in Australia). If the website was a Scotch it'd be quite drinkable, thank you very much. :)
9 years... Yep, the website was born in November 1994... In the dark old days, the dawn of the Internet. At that point in time the website was run and owned by the late Andrew J Gould.
In late 1994 Andrew was exploring the World Wide Web with Lynx from his UNIX shell account, and laying the ground work for his Superman web page. An early version was up and running in November 1994 as part of "Kal-El's Amazing Homepage".
Those early web pages, through to the first graphically enhanced versions in the summer of 1995, were written "blind" in HTML; Andrew relied on those of us with more sophisticated browsers to tell him whether the web page background colours and gif files were showing up correctly. That October Andrew finally got a '486 computer and was able to start using Netscape from home.
Let's travel back in time and take a look at what was happening in 1994...
In 1994 the top 5 grossing movies at the Box Office were "Forrest Gump", "The Lion King", "True Lies", "The Santa Clause", and "The Flintstones".
In the U.S. the top 5 highest rating shows on TV in 1994 were "Seinfeld", "ER, "Home Improvements", "Grace Under Fire", and the NFL Monday Night Football.
In 1994 "Ace of Base" was doing big business in the music industry, with 3 songs in the top 10 songs of 1994. The top 10 were THE SIGN (Ace Of Base), I SWEAR (All-4-Love), I'LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU (Boyz II Men), THE POWER OF LOVE (Celine Dion), HERO (Mariah Carey), STAY (I MISSED YOU) (Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories), BREATHE AGAIN (Toni Braxton), ALL FOR LOVE (Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting), ALL THAT SHE WANTS (Ace Of Base), DON'T TURN AROUND (Ace Of Base).
Anyway, enough of the history lesson... What does the future hold?
As you can see the website is sporting a new design... A new look! Nothing too major. Just a face-lift, a new graphical interface. Just something to give a bit of a lift to the old girl. :)
To mark the occasion we're running a competition where you get to win the birthday presents. We've got some Superman merchandise to give away thanks to our good friends at ToyFan.com. Visit the BIRTHDAY BASH COMPETITION page for details on how to win.
November is also the month we conduct the annual SHIELD Awards, where you get to vote on various aspects of the Superman comics and other merchandise released throughout the past year. Stay tuned for that.
We've got an exclusive interview with fan-favorite "Superman/Batman" comic artist Ed McGuinness coming up this month, plus all the usual bits and pieces you've come to know and love from the Superman Homepage.
I hope you stick around as we move forward for another 99 years... Hey! You never know!
