JLA #91

December 23, 2003: Denny O'Neil Talks JLA

After 35 years Denny O'Neil will once again write a JLA story. That's right, back in 1968 was the last time Denny's name appeared in the credit box of a JLA story. Newsarama caught up with the writer to discuss his up-coming run on JLA. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: Clearly, you're a different person now than you were on your earlier run. How much does that influence the stories of then versus now? Are the themes different, for example? The kind of story?

A: As you say... I'm a very different guy and not just because I'm almost 40 years older. In the '60s, I wasn't aware of such things as "themes." Now I am. I tend to take the medium and the work I do in it a bit more seriously--back then, it was mostly about making a living. I knew nothing of technique or structure when I did the earlier stories - which may not have been a bad thing. I have more freedom now--all comics guys do. The goal, however hasn't changed. We're all still just trying to tell a tale.

Q: So tease the story a little - a threat comes to our universe through a rip in space... what is the JLA's first reaction?

A: The story deals with evolution and religious fundamentalism. I hope this goes unnoticed, however, because everybody will be too busy being entertained.

Q: Of all the characters in the JLA was this story your first time writing any of them, or had you handled them all before?

A: It was my first comic book effort at doing Plastic Man - though he's in the aforementioned novel. Likewise the Kyle Rayner Green Lantern. The rest of them are old friends.
