December 16, 2003: Julie Schwartz in Hospital

Harlan Ellison posted a report on his personal Message Board that Julie Schwartz (a legend in the comic book industry, especially in relation to Superman) has been hospitalized for pneumonia. Here's the report from Ellison's site:

"Julie is in Winthrop Hospital, in the New York suburbs. Don't have an address. Talked to him a few hours ago, and he's lucid, in no pain, but sounding fuzzy and as if he's got a mouthful of cotton batting. No, he hasn't had a stroke; it's pneumonia. Doctor tells him it would've been worse had he not had his flu shot. Who the hell knows? But he says if all goes as prognosis indicates, he should be back home by the end of next week. I'll keep y'all in the loop as best I can. I'll pass on the good wishes."

With a follow-up reading:

"Just received an update from Julie's granddaughter, Andrea -- herself a nurse at Winthrop [the hospital at which Schwartz is receiving treatment] -- and the news is somewhat less than reassuring.

"Julie doesn't even remember that we spoke yesterday. He is sleeping most of the time. Terribly dehydrated, especially for a man 88-and-a-half years old. A blood infection has manifested. He's on the respirator full time. His kidney function is imperiled and substandard at the moment.

"That's all I know right now. It's common sense, so I probably need not say this, but: please do not call or attempt to make contact with Julie right now. When he's coherent, and Andrea tells me he'll be able to receive best wishes, I'll pass along all your kind thoughts, but right now all we can do is worry and hope.
