Secret Identity #1

November 17, 2003: Kurt Busiek Talks “Superman: Secret Identity”

Newsarama have published an article with Kurt Busiek all about the up-coming "Superman: Secret Identity" four-issue miniseries. Here's an excerpt from the article...

Remember the kid from your school days named 'Clark'? Sure - he got more than his fair share of jokes regarding his name resemblance to Superman's. The constant reminder that he's named after a comic book superhero surely got on his nerves. But what if he had more in common with Superman than just a name? What if he had his powers?

Kurt Busiek & Stuart Immonen are exploring that 'Clark Kent' in the upcoming Superman: Secret Identity four-issue miniseries from DC. Besides the name and the powers, this Clark Kent is nothing like his namesake. "This isn't the DC Universe," Busiek explained. "He's just a guy who looks like Clark Kent, who grew up in Kansas, and who, all his life, has dealt with people making the obvious jokes -- 'Hey Clark, where's Superman?' 'Hey, Clark, let's see you fly', 'Hey, Clark, where's Jimmy and Lois?'"

Everyone gets picked on at some point or another, but in this instance it takes a decidedly dramatic turn. "What if he discovers that he has the powers? What choices does he make? How does it affect his life? Does he share the information? Does he keep it private? What opportunities does it open up? Where does it lead him?" The manifestation of those super powers in Clark's adolescence only compounds the struggles any normal teenager would have. "[Clark's] going through an identity crisis, as many teenagers do. His identity crisis, though, is super-powered, which makes for a big difference."
