Jim Lee's Superman

September 30, 2003: Jim Lee Talks Superman

The Pulse website caught up with artist Jim Lee to talk about his up-coming run on "Superman" comics in 2004. Here's an excerpt from the interview which also has some great Jim Lee test illustrations for his rendition of the Man of Steel...

Q: When are you actually taking over?

A: We are slated to jump on April and I'll be on it for 12 issues. I had a lot more lead time with BATMAN, I have less with SUPERMAN. Frankly, I think I can do it, but at the same time, Dan and I have agreed on the benchmarks and if I started missing these benchmarks, they will jump in with a fill in. But my intent is not to miss any--my intent is to do 12 consecutive issues. Because I think that's the only way to do it. I don't like it when an artist only does 4 issues and goes off.

Q: You've had a long time to think about Superman, so what are your thoughts on taking him over?

A: I'm still toying around with how I'm going to approach the character visually. People have always thought he's the light character and Batman's the dark character but does it have to be that way? Could I put him in a lot of shadow? Or should I go the other way and do him as a line drawing and have it colored almost as if he has a light source within him, like he's got a lantern look inside his body and he glows and do the backgrounds gritty with a lot of shadow? I want it to look different from how Batman looked. But it will probably end up looking just the same at the end of the day! (laughs) I think you have to go through these exercises to get back where you started sometimes. Just so you know you explored it.
