September 17, 2003: Ivan Reis Talks “Action Comics”

Newsarama caught up with Ivan Reis, the new artist set to take over "Action Comics" in 2004. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

"I received my first DC job from Eddie Berganza," Reis said. "A story for Superman/Batman Secret Files. In the middle of the job, Eddie invited me to be Action Comics' regular penciller. And here I am -- waiting for the first script from Chuck [Austen]."

Backing up and slowing down a little, Reis can still find landing the regular artist gig on the longest, currently running mainstream superhero comic more than a little unreal. "I'm still trying to understand it all...if it turns out that I'm dreaming, please don't wake me up yet!" Reis said. "Seriously, I believe that it has something to do with my buddy Geoff Johns... we worked together a lot, on things like The Vision, Avengers and Superman/Batman Secret Files. Geoff probably showed some of my works to Eddie Berganza. Well, I don't know for sure...but that's what I figure."

Reis' work on the Superman/Batman Secret Files story was his first encounter with Superman, but isn't exactly the way he's planning on drawing him when he settles in to Action. I adjusted my style to the character during the story production in the Secret Files story," Reis said. "But it isn't still what I have in mind for Superman. I'm sure my work will build up to that when I start working on Action Comics on a monthly basis. I tried to give Superman the looks of a king... the king of the super-heroes... someone who has to make choices which will affect everyone around him.

"For me Superman is more than just a hero, he's a symbol, an icon, a god above all the other super-heroes. I never thought one day I could draw a character who's a synonym of comics. Even better than that... take over a legendary title such as Action Comics. I'm very excited about this! Marc Campos, my inker and good friend also sports an ear-to-ear smile to be with me on the book. Please, don't let me wake up from this dream!"
