September 10, 2003: Winick Talks “Superman/Thundercats”

Newsarama caught up with writer Judd Winick to ask him about the up-coming crossover between Superman and the 1980s children's cartoon characters, The Thundercats. Scheduled to ship in November 2003, this one-shot special is without a doubt one that has many fans scratching their heads. Here's an excerpt from the Newsarama interview...

Yeah, yeah, given that it's Superman we're talking about, and the fact that it's all fictional, there's some silliness on both sides, but the point is, Winick and DC wanted to keep the same tone in the crossover that's in current Superman and Thundercats comics, that is, play it as straight as you can, despite the man in tights and a cape, and walking, talking, humanoid cats.

"Okay, some basic rules for the ridiculous crossover:

"1) You must construct some incredibly contrived way for these two sets of characters--who have absolutely no business being together--to get together.

"2) They have to accidentally be thrown into battle with one another.

"3) They must discover that they're both good guys and seeking the same conclusion to this conflict.

"4) They must team up and then thwart the villain

"4a) The villains must be a combo - villains from each of the characters' respective books.

"5) Then, they must return to their own universes and everything must be as it was before as if this never happened.

"I have done all these things, and I am not lying to you: It's not silly, It's doesn't feel weird, and it's a good read. It's like a giant action film. It's one of few Honest-to God all ages reads I've ever done."
