Matthew Clark's Superman

September 3, 2003: Matthew Clark on Drawing “Adventures of Superman”

The Pulse caught up with artist Matthew Clark, who will soon be teaming up with Greg Rucka to take over the reigns of "Adventures of Superman", and asked him a few questions about his new job. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: Superman is a character that almost everyone throughout the world has heard of at one point or another and has a vision for ... who is Superman to you?

A: He's the dream and the dreamer. SUPERMAN works to make his world a better place, an impossible goal but day after day he goes out into the world and at least tries. Growing up I was given coverless SUPERMAN comics and there I would sit at the table and read them, in amazement. I mean here's this guy with an "s" on the chest stopping villains from destroying the world flying around the city looking through walls. The Stuff of Dreams. I couldn't wait to take a flying leap off the couch, now mind you I thought if I really tried hard I could fly I was also SIX years old.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges drawing this character that you may not face with Inhumans or other heroes that aren't as "universal?"

A: Getting that darn 'S' right. It's just a big pain for me. I try and try. Also just the shear number of artists who have drawn him, I always look at SUPERMAN and say "I hope he looks right", I'll even ask my fellow STUDIO MATES if he looks ok. I'm going to have to get used to drawing normal looking people, there is something very freeing about drawing someone that isn't human. I really enjoy the fact if I want to draw a giant teleporting bulldog with tuning fork or someone with bows as fingers I can. I really want to make SUPERMAN look good and powerful, I want heads to turn. SUPERMAN has this presence that I want to capture, this presence NO other character has, not BATMAN or WONDER WOMAN or SPIDERMAN or CAPTAIN AMERICA. That's the challenge....OH God help me :)
