August 17, 2003: More Superman: Birthright Interviews
In parts 2 and 3 of their "Superman: Birthright" interviews, Comic Book Resources talk with both inker Gerry Alanquilan and colorist Dave McCaig about their work on this 12-part series written by Mark Waid. Here's an excerpt from both interviews..."Superman is a project that I just can't say no to. He's the one that started it all, the ultimate super hero. I don't consider working on Superman as a job, I consider it an honor. I can scarcely believe I'm actually involved in this. I really didn't dream of working on Superman when I was a kid. I dreamt of drawing Wolverine and Iron Man and Conan. That's because I knew that through hard work, I could probably do it. But Superman...I didn't even think of it. It was just too impossible. Too unthinkable. But now that I'm here... Wow!!"
Part of the reason for Alanguilan's enthusiasm is that he is a big Superman fan, like many of the people involved with this project, and feels the character offers a great ideal for people to aspire to achieve. "Superman will always embody an ideal that I would always aspire to achieve. That would entail ultimate goodness, honesty, integrity, bravery. Such concepts may appear too boring to some, but not to me. The world is such an ugly place already with all the troubles we've been having. As humans we swim through all that muck everyday. It can get really depressing and you could lose yourself if you allow yourself to. Superman is like an anchor, the one you think about that cannot be touched by all this hate, this anger, this fear. You read his adventures in comics and somehow you feel hopeful because despite of everything, he still strives to do what is right and what is good."

Meanwhile, here's some of what Dave McCaig had to say...
"Well to me, essentially it's kind of Mark Waid's take on making Superman believable and cool again for today's readers," explains McCaig. "He's found a way to bring him back to his roots, and focused on the things that are so right about the character. His virtue, good heartedness, and empathy. Plus his rough and tumble attitude from the 30's, and his good-natured smartassedness. This Superman is a good guy, but he's no wuss. He dishes out some damage and takes the badguys down hard.
"Superman's powers have been redefined lightly too, so they now make some kind of logical sense, which pleases the science nerd in me to no end. Now his heat vision, x-ray vision, and telescopic vision are all just a natural extension of his very alien sense of sight. It's really cool getting to see just how it works. This Superman sees beyond the human spectrum, and to him, living beings are surrounded by vibrant auras of energy. This gives him a deeper understanding and respect for life. So now, Superman can get totally pissed off at some bad guy, and melt his gun with his heat vision, and you'll just accept it, and know why he'd never even consider killing the guy. Not because we know from the Superman Rulebook that 'Superman does not kill,' but because you can kind of see why from his point of view, literally.
