Adventures of Superman #616

March 7, 2003: Joe Casey Talks Superman Comics

The Pulse website caught up with "Adventures of Superman" writer, Joe Casey to talk to him about the various projects he's working on at the moment... Here's an excerpt from the interview where Casey discusses his work on Superman...

Q: You've said that you try not to have Superman throw a punch in the book. Why? Isn't it hard to write a superhero book without the fighting?

CASEY: We did a story called ENDING BATTLE in the Superman books back in Sept.-Oct. of '02, and it was a big, sloppy super-villain slugfest/blowout/blah, blah, blah. I promised myself after participating in that story that I would write Superman without him having to throw a punch and get into the whole Pro Wrestling aspect of superhero comicbooks. He doesn't need to trade punches with costumed bank robbers. To me, Superman is a character who's above all the cliches that other superheroes are saddled with. I've written eight issues since then and I've stayed true to my word. It's much easier to NOT have to worry about including the obligatory "fight scene". It's been liberating, actually. I'm sure that, at some point, I'll go back to superheroes body slamming each other but for now, this is right approach for me when it comes to writing Superman.

Q: For better or worse, you've had a crack at some of the most iconic figures in comics history. Where does writing Superman rank with that?

CASEY: As icons go, it doesn't get any better than Superman. He's the original superhero. He's the most primal and he ranks #1 with me right now. I'm getting to add a brick into a wall of grand tradition and that's very cool to me.
