Superman #193

March 1, 2003: Steven Seagle Talks “Superman” Comics

Newsarama caught up with new "Superman" comics writer Steven Seagle to talk about his take on the character, why he originally turned down working on the title, and what plans he has for the Man of Steel. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Seagle hopes his focus on Superman's powers and a slant toward science fiction will help set his tenure apart from previous writers. "I'm bringing an alien sensibility to Superman," Seagle said. "Focusing on his powers and how otherworldly they really are. I'm also making the book much more science fiction than adventure fiction. It makes for 'Ultimate' Superman without having to do a reboot or any retroactive continuity house cleaning."

As far as supporting cast members are concerned, Seagle sees Lois Lane and Perry White as the key elements of the group. "By and large, I'm focusing only on Lois and Perry because I think they are the nuclear family that is the main Superman book," Seagle said. "From there we're building a new set of supporting characters and villains. I think the books have been good, but a little hard to penetrate for the last few years. So Scott and I are putting out one and two-issue stories, no crossovers, and tons of new characters and concepts so people can jump into the book fairly easily."
