October 19, 2002: Big Ratings for “Smallville”

Variety reports that the WB's "Smallville" is racing up the Nielsen charts faster than a speeding bullet, teaming with "Gilmore Girls" to help the network set more records on Tuesday night.

According to Nielsen, the young-Superman drama delivered not only its best-ever results, but the highest adults 18-34 rating for any program in the WB's history (4.5 rating/13 share), and the second highest in adults 18-49 (4.4/11).

In its second half-hour, "Smallville" was the highest-rated show on television in 18-49 (4.5/11), edging rookie NBC comedy "Hidden Hills" (4.4/11).

"Smallville," which averaged 8.9 million viewers overall, also set or equaled its all-time series records in demos including persons 12-34 (5.5/16), women 18-49 (4.5/11) and teens (5.7/19).

At 8, "Gilmore Girls" won its time slot in women 18-34 (4.8/14) and teens (4.1/14) and ran second in persons 12-34 (3.7/12).

For the night, the WB finished first in adults 18-34 (4.5/13) and persons 12-34 (4.6/14). It also achieved its best-ever night in adults 18-49 (3.5/9) and enjoyed its all-time best Tuesday in several categories.
