May 4, 2002: Special Edition Comics Heroes Magazine

In a special edition magazine titled "Spider-man & Other Comics Heroes" dated July 2002 and published by the editors of Starlog & Comics Scene, is an article titled, "The Man Who Was Almost Spiderman" that discusses a Spiderman film that was never made in the 1980s.

This film was set to star actor-stuntman Scott Leva in the leading role of Peter Parker/Spiderman and was to be produced by Canon films, the company behind Superman IV. Leva reveals other actors considered for the role of Spiderman, ""The names they were talking about were Tom Cruise and Christopher Reeve".

Christopher "Superman" Reeve? "Yeah his name came up," Leva reveals. "I don't think he was ever gung-ho to play Spiderman, and that big Spider-Man presentation at Cannes was cancelled because other deals were being made there [Cannon exec] Menahem Golan made a deal to do Superman IV [which would involve Reeve], and they were all excited that it was gonna be a mega hit."" Leva goes on to say, "Spider-Man fell by the wayside because Cannon was putting all its energy into Masters of the Universe and Superman IV, both of which ended up being flops. Cannon was having tons of problems after that."

Since the 80s Leva has worked as an actor and stuntman on the 90s TV series Lois & Clark, "I was a sleazy business guy. During a conference, I make a bad comment to the boss, so he shoves me down an elevator shaft! I also doubled for John Shea and Dean Cain, so I got to wear the Superman suit. It was a dream come true. I'm still a bit of a comic book fan, so wearing the actual suit - with the big S and the cape - it doesn't get any better than that!"

The magazine also contains interviews with Smallville's Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor).

Thanks to Dj in the UK for the report.
