February 13, 2002: Superman PS2 Game - Launch Date Announced!
An inside source has confirmed for me that the Superman PlayStation 2 game will be released September this year.An article titled "Superman (PS2) Details" was recently published by the To The Game website. The article announces that the game's title is actually "Superman: Shadow of Apokolips". Here are some excerpts from the article:
"From the very beginning of the game all of Superman's world-famous powers will be available to the player, including x-ray, telescopic, micro-scopic, infrared and heat vision, superhuman senses, superhuman strength and speed, invulnerability and of course - the ability to fly.
Gameplay: The multi-layered storyline, co-written with DC Comics and complimented with a full orchestral soundtrack, follows Superman through a series of desperate-yet-heroic battles with a variety of well known super-villains, including the assassin Metallo, armed with the latest range of Hi-Tech weaponry of Apokoliptian origin. The player will need to harness the powers of Superman and make tactical, situation-sensitive decisions as to which power and course of action is most suitable.
In one level of the game Superman faces disaster at Luthor Dam and needs to prioritise and act upon a series of deadly attacks by robotic-killers. Does he rescue Lois Lane from the dangling cable car, or should he rush to the dam face and repair the fast appearing cracks caused by an explosion? Should he take out the jetpack robots before they threaten the hospital area or should he save the civilians trapped by fire?
Having a choice of how to solve each life-threatening situation further enhances gameplay for the players. Deciding to save the civilians trapped by fire, Superman can rescue each one individually or use the environment to create makeshift bridges. Does he take out the robots individually from a distance using his heat vision, fly directly to them and use his SuperPunch or even use his Superbreath to blow them away? The choice is the players.
Superman offers mission-based gameplay ranging from all out combat to more stealth style missions as Clark Kent. The variety in gameplay is only matched by that found in the 15 massive levels, including Strykers Island prison and Metropolis itself.
Every environment will be truly interactive with deformable objects and events occurring on the basis of Superman's decisions. Advanced AI sees the enemy co-operating through squad based tactics, weapon sharing, target prioritisation - even their morale is affected by the player's success.
A seamless flight model, hand-to-hand combat and Superman's full arsenal of super-powers, all combined in a state-of-the-art proprietary game engine will truly push the technological boundaries of PlayStation®2.
Rob Smith, Senior Producer at Infogrames, commented "We intend to make this an all-out action game as iconic to the games player as the S-Shield itself."
