November 16, 2001: Superman/Batman Movie Rumor!

A report has been filed at the Ain't It Cool News website detailing (supposed) inside information regarding the long rumored "World's Finest" project putting Superman and Batman together in a major motion picture. Here's an excerpt from the report:

Lets get down to what is what SUPERMAN/BATMAN... Andrew Kevin Walker turned this bad boy in around a month ago and is currently working on the first draft. The WB hopes to have a summer 2003 flick on their hands. And well I hope it comes true. Wolfgang Peterson is ready and has cleared out his future projects to stay with this film for the next few years.

LEX LUTHOR! THE JOKER! GOTHAM WORLD"S FAIR! MACHINE MEN!!!!!

Well here we go. This is the treatment and not the final script. This runs about 40 pages long. From what I can tell this is basically BATMAN 5 with SUPERMAN in it. The title is BATMAN/SUPERMAN. I guess the WB decided not to put an & in between in fear people might think it will be like BATMAN & ROBIN.

BATMAN: There is no doubt this is the Batman from the last four films. But he is all alone in this one. No Bat-girl, No Robin. Nightwing is mentioned one time and that's it. He is much darker and driven. The death of his parents still haunts him. For the first time on film he is a confident Batman... Not dealing with finding the murderer of his parents. Not trying to figure out if he should hit or kiss Catwoman. Not wondering if he's Batman or Bruce Wayne and NOT AT ALL showing up in the public with a credit card. That's one thing this treatment (from what I can tell) has done right. Batman and Superman have scenes together but Superman carries the public role as he should. Batman is left in the shadows for the first time in almost ten years on film.

SUPERMAN: It's hard to tell from only this treatment whether this is the Superman from the past four films. Nowhere near the amount of information is given about him compared to Batman. But Superman is already well known in this story. He has been around as long as Batman, they just have never met. There is no doubt Bats has more screen time than Supes. But I am sad to say Superman gets more of the action while Batman is mostly in the shadows doing detective work.

Remember, this is one unconfirmed "scoop" handed in. It does not necessarily form the complete truth, as Warner Bros. have not confirmed anything in this report. Take it as another rumor in a long line of rumors about the next Superman movie. Time will tell...
