July 28, 2000: Superman DVD Update

Widescreen Review have the scoop on the upcoming Superman: The Movie release, and it looks set to rock. Expect an anamorphic widescreen transfer preserving the film's original theatrical aspect ratio, with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Extras will include commentary (with director Richard Donner and producer Tom Mankiwicz), two versions of the film (theatrical cut and an extended cut via seamless branching), a new "making of" documentary with new interviews with Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, director Richard Donner, editor Stuart Baird, composer John Williams, and other cast and crew members, an isolated score track highlighting Williams' music, and more. The documentary looks to be particularly promising, with never-before-seen footage shot during production. You'll also get info on screen tests, trailers, and TV spots. According to DVD producer Jonathan Gaines, a theatrical re-release is under consideration. There is the possibility that the DVD will be available later this year and, if not, early next year. After this, there are plans to release the next three films. There are no current plans for a box set.
